What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. For more information, please visit  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/med/med-gen-eng.php

About Resolor 1 mg

What is Resolor?

Resolor or as it is known in Canada, Resotran, is a prokinetic medication used for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (aka functional constipation) where laxatives have been inadequately effective.

The active ingredient, chemical name is prucalopride. Prucalopride belongs to a class of compounds known as dihydrobenzofurancarboxamide. Prucalopride is marketed under three different brand names namely Resolor (US), Resotran (Canada) and Motegrity (US).

How does Resolor (Prucalopride), work?

As a prokinetic medication, Resolor works to stimulate peristalsis and the movement along the alimentary canal to alleviate symptoms of chronic constipation. As a serotonin 5-HT4 receptor agonist, prucalopride stimulates proximal colonic movement and increases the rate of gastric emptying. These effects serve to regulate bowel movements and decrease the symptoms of chronic constipation.

How should I take Resolor?

The recommended dosage of Resolor is 2mg once daily. Doses are frequently commenced on a lower dosage and titrated up to the maximum recommended dosage of 2mg. If there are no bowel movement in 3-4 days additional, adjunct laxatives should be considered.

If you miss a dose of your Resolor take the dose as soon as you remember and then take your next dose approximately 24 hours later. DO NOT double your dose if you miss a dose as Resolor has a long half-life of around one day.

Resolor (Prucalopride) as an adjunct treatment and remission of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)

One of the main causes for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is an underlaying impaired motility. For many years Doctors have been using prokinetics in an attempt to normalize bowel movements and prevent SIBO relapse. Some Doctors prescribe prucalopride, off-license for this purpose.

What side-effects could I expect when taking Resolor?

The most common side effects of Resolor include, but are not limited to; Gastrointestinal side-effects - due to the mechanism of action of Resolor some patients may suffer from nausea or diarrhea. Other side-effects include headache as well as dizziness.

Should I take Resolor with food?

Resolor has no reported interactions to food and for this reason may be taken with or without food.

The important thing is to try to take Resolor at the same time each day, so doses are taken 24 hours apart.

Is it safe to drink alcohol when taking Resolor?

There are no drug-drug interactions reported between alcohol and Resolor. However, as Resolor may cause dizziness this may be exacerbated by alcohol.

Are there any drug-drug interactions to be aware of when taking Resolor?

Always inform your Pharmacist ad Doctor of all medication you are taking at the time of dispensing.

Resolor (Prucalopride) interacts with P-gp inhibitors such as Ketoconazole, Verapamil, Cyclosporine A and Quinidine. This list is not complete so always check with your Pharmacist with the medication you are taking.
