About Dexilant 60 mg

What is Dexilant used for?

Dexilant is PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) use to treat and relieve symptoms caused by acid reflux, and other stomach and esophagus related problems, listed here below. It is only recommended for the treatment of patients over the age of 12 years of age. Dexilant is indicated in the treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis, a condition where the throat has been damaged by the backflow of the acidic contents of the stomach. Dexilant is used to treat the symptoms GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) such as heartburn, painful burps and bad/sour taste in the mouth. Dexilant is used in the management and treatment of healing of all grade esophagitis. It is also used in the maintenance of healed and healing esophagitis.

What is the mechanism of action of Dexilant?

Dexilant belongs to a group of medications known as PPIs or Proton Pump Inhibitors. Dexilant acts on the proton pump within the parietal cell to decrease acid secretion by inhibition of the (H+, K+)- ATPase. By working here within the parietal cell, Dexilant works at the final step of acid production in the stomach. Dexilant contains tiny beads known as granules. These granules release the medication at different rates so the medication is active in the body for longer. There are two different release rates of the beads, one within one hour and the other at between four to five hours after ingestion.

How should I take Dexilant? (Dexilant Dosage)

Dexilant is designed to be taken once a day. Dexilant should be used at the lowest effective dose for the minimum effective time period. Take your Dexilant capsule at the same time each day, swallowed with a full glass of water.

If you a miss a dose of your Dexilant, take the capsule as soon as you remember. Do not double your dosage if you remember you haven't taken your previous dose. It is always best to take your Dexilant capsules 24 hours apart.

Side effects of Dexilant

With Dexilant serious side-effects are said to be uncommon particularly for short term use. The most common side-effects to be aware of are constipation, belching, headache, stomach pains and nausea. There are other concerns with longer term usage as explained below.

Are there any long term side effects of taking Dexilant?

As mentioned previously Dexilant should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest effective duration of treatment. Long term usage of PPIs have be associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the wrist, spine and hip. This risk is most significantly increased in patients taking high doses (defined as multiple daily doses) for long term (over one year treatment). Risk for fundic gland polyps, which are usually asymptomatic also increases with use beyond one year.

Can I take Dexilant on an empty stomach?

Dexilant can be taken without regard to food intake. You can take Dexilant with or without food.

Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking Dexilant?

As alcohol may directly affect the condition you are treating using Dexilant it is usually recommended to avoid alcohol. Talk with your Doctor for advise on your condition and if drinking alcohol is suitable. Alcohol should be avoided when taking the 'solutab', dissolvable version of Dexilant as it may affect the release rate. Unfortunately the manufacturer has not provided a time period between Dexilant solutab and taking alcohol.

What drugs interact with Dexilant?

As Dexilant is metabolised by CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 there are quite a few key drug - drug interactions to be aware of. Always disclose and discuss with your Doctor and Pharmacist the medication you currently take when you have been prescribed Dexilant. Some interactions that may require intervention by your Doctor are ketoconazole, tacrolimus and atazanavir. This list is not complete. Treatment should be monitored for patients taking iron supplements or using methotrexate and taking Dexilant.
