What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. About Eliquis 5 mg
What is Eliquis used to treat for?
Eliquis works as anticoagulant or blood thinner and is used to prevent injury in a number of scenarios as explained below. Eliquis is used post kneed or hip replacement surgery to prevent blood clot formation complications. It is used in the management of atrial fibrillation (AF) and to manage the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with AF. Eliquis is also used in the treatment and management of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). It helps prevent against blood clotting, thinning the blood to prevent the likelihood of DVT and PE.
Eliquis - Mechanism of Action
Eliquis acts on Factor-Xa to prevent the formation of blood clots. It is known as an anticoagulant or blood thinner.
What is the dosage of Eliquis?
The dosage of Eliquis is determined by a number of factors, including the patient themselves and the condition being treated. The renal function should be measure prior to the initiation of Eliquis and at least on a yearly basis.
For the prevention of VTE following hip or knee surgery the recommended dose is 2.5 mg twice a day with the first dose taken 12 - 24 hours after the first. The recommended duration of treatment for hip surgery is 35 - 38 days and for knee surgery it is 10 - 14 days.
The Eliquis dosage for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation is 5 mg twice a day. Dosage adjustments to 2.5 mg twice a day may be necessary in elderly patient over 80 years of age, with low body weight (less than 60 kg) or with renal impairment. These patients may be at an increased risk of bleeding. Following an acute DVT and PE the recommended dosage of Eliquis is 10 mg twice a day for 7 days, before this dose is reduced to 5 mg twice a day.
Duration of therapy as always is determined by the benefit weighed against the patients risk of bleeding. A short duration would be considered as at least 3 months.
If you miss a dose of your Eliquis, take your dose as soon as you remember. Do not double on a dose to account for a missed dose.
Eliquis vs Warfarin
Although Eliquis and warfarin are both anticoagulant medications, often used in the management of the same conditions, they work in very different ways and as a result have different safety and efficacy profiles.
Eliquis acts on factor Xa while warfarin acts as a vitamin K antagonist. A major benefit of Eliquis over warfarin is the fact that there is less monitoring required for Eliquis than warfarin. Eliquis also boasts a greater protection against stroke with a lower risk of bleeding.
The major downside of using Eliquis other than warfarin is the price tag, with Eliquis being much more expensive than warfarin.
Side Effects of Eliquis
A very important side-effect to be aware of with Eliquis is bleeding. All patients should be counselled to the risk of bleeding. Contact your Doctor immediately for any prolonged bleeding.
Signs of serious bleeding include unusual swelling and pain as well as prolonged bleeding in heavy menstrual flows, pink or red urine, black of bloody stools, severe headache, dizziness, weakness and persistent nosebleeds.
Common side-effects include nausea, minor bruising and minor bleeding such as nose bleeds or cuts. If these symptoms persist contact your Doctor immediately.
Can Eliquis be taken on an empty stomach?
Eliquis can be taken on an empty food or with food.
Can I drink alcohol when taking Eliquius?
You can drink alcohol when taking Eliquis but it is advisable to drink less than 14 alcohol units per week. As drinking heavily is dangerous while taking Eliquis, these units should be spread out. Alcohol has a blood thinning effect which can increase the risk of bleeding.
When will the Eliquis generic be available?

FAQs
If you are unable to swallow your Eliquis tablets you can crush the tablets to a fine powder. This powder can then be suspended in a water or mixed with an apple sauce for consumption.
The length of treatment of Eliquis is determined by a number of factors. Ultimately the benefit of taking Eliquis must be continuously weighed against the risk of bleeding. Treatment durations of Eliquis are specific to the patient and their condition. For example following a DVT or PE, the dose if only reduced to the lower dose of 2.5 mg twice a day after a minimum period of six months. Eliquis should not be suddenly stopped but the dose will be gradually decreased as other biometrics are measured. Using Eliquis for hip or knee surgery has more defined duration lengths. For hip therapy it is usually 34 - 38 days and 10 - 14 days for knee surgery.
A major advantage of Eliquis is that there is a lot less monitoring than the traditional oral blood thinners that act as vitamin k antagonists. These newer anticoagulants do not require the frequent INR monitoring. Patients should still be monitored during usage by their Doctors, particularly during the initiation of the new therapy.
The recommended treatment duration of Eliquis for hip surgery is 32 to 38 days.
The usual length of treatment of Eliquis when used following knee surgery is 10 - 14 days.
The Eliquis bike commercial was filmed in Sedona, AZ.
