What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. For more information, please visit

About FLOVENT HFA 110 mcg Inhaler

What type of medication is Flovent?

Flovent is the brand name for a common corticosteroid inhaler used to treat and manage lung function problems such as asthma and COPD. The active ingredient is Fluticasone Propionate.

How does Flovent work?

As a corticosteroid, Flovent works locally with anti-inflammatory effects within the lungs. Overtime this will help a patient remain free of exacerbations and flare ups. Flovent works on a number of cells including mast cells, basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes and macrophages to dampen the immune response that is causing a constriction in the airways.

What is the most common dosage of Flovent

The most common dosage of Flovent is 1-2 puffs twice daily.

If you miss a dose of your inhaler take the next dose as soon as you remember. Take your next dose close to 12 hours later if possible.

Directions on using your Flovent Inhaler

Always follow the instructions that come with the inhaler on how to use the Flovent inhaler.

Ensure that any new inhaler is properly primed by following the directions below.

Open the inhaler by removing the mouthpiece cover. Shake the inhaler to uniformly mix the canister contents.
Always prime your inhaler if it's you first time using it.
Hold the inhaler upright, rested on your thumb with your forefinger on the canister pump.
Breathe out as far as comfortable before placing the inhaler mouthpiece gently between your teeth and wrapping your lips around the outside of the mouthpiece.
As you breathe in, through the inhaler, press the canister to release one puff of your medication.
Breathe in fully and hold your breath for around 10 seconds, or as long as comfortable , before breathing out slowly.
If directed to take another puff wait about thirty seconds.

Always remember to rinse out your mouth after using Flovent.

How to prime your inhaler?

On the first time using a new inhaler it is important to ‘prime’ the inhaler. To prime a Flovent inhaler, remove the mouthpiece and shake well for around five seconds. Press the canister to release one puff into the air. Shake again for five more seconds before pressing the canister one more time to release another puff into the air.

What are the Side-effects of Flovent?

The most common side effect of using Flovent is oral thrush. When using an inhaler there is some deposition of the drug in the buccal cavity (mouth). This renders the tongue and mouth susceptible to overgrowth of the fungus Candida Albican.

This side-effect can be easily mitigated by rising your mouth out with water after using your inhaler each time. Other common side-effects include headaches, flu-like symptoms including nasal congestion and a hoarse voice.

Can I smoke when using my Flovent Inhaler?

Although there may not be a direct drug - drug interaction between nicotine and fluticasone, smoking has been shown to decrease the therapeutic effects of Flovent. Please speak to your Doctor about quitting today.

Using Flovent HFA with Pets

Our pets are unfortunately not immune to the lung function problems that plague humans. Many animals suffer from asthma and COPD and require a medication regimen using Flovent to help manage their breathing.

Your veterinarian should counsel you on the proper usage of Flovent. If you have a cat you will need to purchase a spacer such as an AeroKat chamber or and AeroDawg chamber for a dog. Buying Flovent in Canada with a US prescription

With the ever increasing cost of Flovent in the States more and more patients are coming to Canada to buy their medication. Although some patients have been able to attain Flovent coupons or using patient assistance program to save on the cost of their medication, the majority of patients have been forced to look further afield.

By ordering online from a Canadian Pharmacy such as ourselves, patients have been able to save thousands of dollars per year for an equivalent, safe and effective option.

Why use a spacer device?
Spacers allow for an effective dose to be delivered to patients who otherwise would struggle or be unable to self-administer their dose directly from the Flovent HFA. Pay special attention to the aftercare of the spacer after usage and always follow the manufacturer's advice.
How to use a spacer?
Spacers, or aerochambers, are often used when administering Flovent HFA to infants, small children or pets such as cats (AeroKat) or dogs (AeroDawg).Always follow the instructions that come with the spacer device to attach the spacer to the inhaler and use effectively. Shake well your Flovent HFA inhaler. Attach your inhaler mouthpiece to the spacer device as directed. Put spacer mouthpiece gently between teeth and wrap lips around the opening. Press canister to release one puff and breathe naturally for 3 - 4 breaths. Remove spacer and breathe out gently. Repeat if more than one dose is prescribed
Is there a generic of Flovent available in Canada?
Unfortunately there is no generic available for Flovent here in Canada.
When will a generic be available of Flovent HFA?
As yet we have no date for when a generic may be released in Canada. One source states that the Flovent patent is due to expire on August 26th 2026.
