What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. For more information, please visit  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/med/med-gen-eng.php

About Linzess 72 mcg

What is Linzess used for?

Linzess, also known by its chemical name linaclotide, belongs to a class of drugs known as guanylate cyclase-C agonists. Linzess is used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome associated with constipation (IBS-C). These diseases can result in painful stomach pains, and Linzess can alleviate these types of belly pains.

What does Linzess do in the body?

The active ingredient of Linzess is linaclotide. Linzess is poorly absorbed when taken orally and hence remains in the gastrointestinal tract, also known as the lumen. It works locally by directly affecting the inner cells, also known as the epithelium, of the gastrointestinal tract. Linzess works by causing ions (such as sodium Na+ an bicarbonate HCO3-) to move out of these cells and into the gut, where they attract water to soften stool and accelerate bowel movements. In addition, Linzess has an analgesic effect, reducing pain, on the inner lining of the gut by calming pain-sensing nerves.

How is Linzess taken?

Your doctor will set your dose depending on what condition is being treated. Below shows the general Linzess dosing as set in the monograph:

  • For irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, a dose of 290 mg is given once daily.
  • For chronic idiopathic constipation a dose of 145 mg is given once daily.
  • A dose of 72 mg is only used for individuals who are abnormally sensitive to the higher doses.

If the dose is missed do not use double the dose, just wait and take the next dose at the scheduled time.

Is Linzess a laxative?

Linzess is not considered a laxative. Linzess is poorly absorbed when taken orally, which is great so that it stays in the gastrointestinal tract affecting the intestine directly. Laxative are generally classified as either bulk-forming laxatives, lubricants, osmotic laxatives, stimulant laxatives, stool softeners, or combinations thereof. These agents affect the stool directly, whereas Linzess affects the biophysiology of the lumen or the inside of the intestine, stimulating it to secrete salt ions that move water into the lumen and soften the stool indirectly; this also results in accelerated bowel movements.

Does Linzess have side effects?

Diarrhea is the most common side effect. Less common are abdominal pain, flatulence, and other gastrointestinal disturbance.

Can I take Linzess with food?

Linzess if best taken on an empty stomach 30 min before breakfast. Having a high fat breakfast with Linzess, for example, results in looser stools.

Are probiotics ok to use with Linzess?

Linzess has not shown to react with any other medications, food, or herbal products. Some people sprinkle the beads on yogurt for ease of swallowing. There should be no issue to use probiotics with Linzess, unless you are allergic to either Linzess or the probiotic.

Does Linzess have drug interactions?

No, since Linzess is not readily absorbed by the body, it does not show in blood plasma, hence does not interact with other drugs or herbal medications.
