About Trelegy Ellipta

What is Trelegy Ellipta Inhaler?

Trelegy Ellipta is a FDA-approved once-daily inhaler medicine that combines 3 long-acting medicines in 1 inhaler and is used to treat and manage lung functions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults. Trelegy Ellipta is effective for reducing flare-ups. Trelegy Ellipta is a maintenance medication and cannot be used to relieve sudden breathing problems.  Trelegy Ellipta is not for the treatment of asthma.

How does Trelegy Ellipta work?

This inhaler delivers three drugs namely, fluticasone furoate, umeclidinium, and vilanterol.
Fluticasone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. Fluticasone helps to decrease inflammatory cells,  such as eosinophils, monocytes, mast cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It reduces inflammation and swelling in the lungs.
Umeclidinium is a long acting antimuscarinic (LAMA) anticholinergic that affects muscarinic receptors M1 - M5.  Umeclidinium causes bronchodilation in the airways by inhibiting the M3 receptors at the smooth muscle sites. It blocks tightening of smooth muscle around your airways and keep them open.
Vilanterol is a long acting bronchodilator (LABA). It increase cyclic AMP levels, relaxes bronchial smooth muscles, and inhibits inflammatory mediators. It opens airways by relaxing muscles around the airways in your lungs and thus ease the breathing.

What is the most common dosage of Trelegy Ellipta?

Use 1 inhalation a day. Try to use medication at the same time every day. If you miss a dose of inhalation, take it immediately whenever you remember. Do not exceed 1 inhalation per day. Take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take 2 doses at 1 time. That means 1 single inhalation once a day will provide you a full 1 day of easy breathing. This inhaler reduces COPD flare-ups.
Your symptoms may worsen if you discontinue your inhaler without speaking to your healthcare provider. Just remember that if you stop taking your daily dose by inhalation, symptoms could return. Your healthcare provider will change your medicines as needed.

Directions on using your Trelegy Ellipta inhaler

Always follow the instructions that come with the inhaler. Before the inhaler is used for the first time, the counter will show the number 30, which represents the number of doses packed in the inhaler. If you just open and close the cover without inhaling the medicine, your 1 dose is lost. The lost dose will be trapped inside, but won’t be available for inhalation.
Open the cover of the inhaler and slide the cover down to expose the mouthpiece. You should hear a “click.” The counter will count down by 1 number. Do not shake the inhaler. If the counter does not decrease by 1 number, means inhaler will not deliver the medicine.

Exhale fully while holding the inhaler away from your mouth. Do not breathe out into the mouthpiece. Close the mouthpiece between the lips so as to fit it perfectly over the curved shape.
Take one breath in through your mouth. Do not block the air vent with your fingers. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 3 to 4 seconds.
Breathe out slowly and gently. You may not taste or feel the medicine, even when you are using the inhaler correctly.  Close the inhaler. If you need to clean your mouth piece, use a dry tissue.  Rinse your mouth with water and spit the water out, without swallowing it.

When should you get a refill of Trelegy Ellipta?

When you have less than 10 doses in the inhaler, red indicator as a reminder will be seen. This is the time to get it filled. After inhalation of the last dose, the counter will show “0” and the device will be empty. Throw away the empty inhaler device away in your household trash. Keep the inhaler out of reach of children and pets.
