Feline Asthma Management

Just like humans, cats also suffer from asthma when there is inflammation in their lungs which makes it difficult for them to breathe. When you notice that your cat is having problems breathing, you need to take them to the veterinarian immediately. While some cats might suffer from mild asthma symptoms, delaying treatment can lead to complications in their health that go beyond wheezing and coughing.

Asthma signs and symptoms you need to look out for
If your cat has asthma, there are a few signs and symptoms you need to be on the lookout for. The first is to look out for heavy breathing. If your feline is taking 40 breaths a minute rather than 25-30 breaths, there is a chance they have asthma. Tiredness and lethargy are the other things you need to look out for.nIf your cat runs out of breath too quickly and appears lethargic when you play with them, it’s a sign that their airwaves might be swollen. Another sign of asthma is panting and this is common when a cat is struggling to get oxygen flowing in their lungs. A very unusual cough is the fourth sign of asthma in cats. If you notice that your cat is coughing more than they should be, they are probably having an asthma attack. A first sign you will notice is wheezing. When your cat is struggling to get air into their lungs, they will make a whistling sound. This is known as wheezing and is a clear sign of asthma. The last sign of a cat with asthma is their gums and lips turning blue. This happens if they are struggling to get oxygen to all parts of their body.

What are the things that cause or trigger asthma in cats

While there is no specific cause for asthma in cats, there are few things that can trigger it. These things include smoke from cigarettes if you are a smoker, sprays, perfumes, and chemicals, health issues or illness, dust, mold, grass, and pollen, parasites, obesity, and stress.

What to do if you suspect your cat may have asthma

If you notice any red flags when it comes to their breathing, take them to the veterinarian immediately. They will be able to conduct some tests and let you know what’s causing their breathing issues.

Ways of preventing asthma attacks in cats

If you want to prevent an asthma attack in your cat, there are a few things you can do. The first is to take your cat to the veterinarian for regular check-ups. Make sure that provide your cat with a stress-free environment because too much stress makes asthma symptoms worse.

When your cat is in the same room as you, don’t use sprays, chemicals, perfumes,  air fresheners, and more. Buy cat litter that doesn’t produce lots of dust because this can trigger their asthma. Lastly, manage your cat’s weight and avoid smoking around them.

The best treatment for cat asthma

A treatment that is recommended by many for cat asthma is Flovent (Fluticasone). This inhaler is known to be very effective when combined with AeroKat during use. Vets often advise owners to buy aerosol masks as it is the best way to not only keep track of doses but make sure their cats receive every single Flovent dose.

Things you need to know before using Flovent with your cat

The first thing you need to be aware of is it takes 7 - 10 days to work. Results are not instant and you’ll have to be patient. Before you administer Flovent to your cat, you have to make sure that the mask fits them properly. It should cover your cats found and fit securely around the muzzle.
