Hyaluronic Acid for Skin

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a clear, jelly-like substance occurring naturally mainly in our skin, eyes, and connective tissues. Its main function is to retain moisture and thus keep the tissues lubricated. In the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis), it binds to collagen on one side and water molecules on the other. This keeps our skin moist and hydrated.

As we age, levels of hyaluronic acid decrease and the skin’s protective barrier (lipid barrier) starts breaking down. This makes the skin more prone to dehydration, cold weather, UV radiations, smoke, pollution, and toxins. All these can damage the skin to a great extent. Hence, this is where the importance of hyaluronic acid use jumps in.

How is Hyaluronic Acid Use Beneficial for Our Skin?

Hyaluronic acid is readily available in moisturizers, eye serums, and as supplements and injections. According to a cosmetic chemist Sandra Bontempo, Hyaluronic acid penetrates easily, which is why it works so well when applied topically. It also holds about 1000 times its molecular weight in water and absorbs moisture both from the outer environment and from the deeper layers of the skin (dermis). This makes the skin soft, supple, and glowy. It also smoothens fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.

Furthermore, hyaluronic acid strengthens the skin’s lipid barrier and makes it resilient to infections, pollutants, and toxins. Its use also results in tighter skin tone with firm facial contours, which gives our skin a more youthful appearance.

Are There Any Associated Adverse Effects?

Hyaluronic acid is safe for all skin types but it is specially recommended for people with dry or more mature skin as topical application can greatly reduce the signs of aging.

The use of this wonder product is usually not associated with adverse effects. Rarely, injectable versions of hyaluronic acid can cause bruising and swelling which should resolve in a few days. The best practice, however, is to consult your dermatologist before you decide on using it for your skin.
