Treatment options for Diabetes

By Canada Cloud Pharmacy | Published Saturday 01 May 2021

There are many treatment options available for different types of diabetes. A medical health professional will use one or two treatment options to achieve adequate blood glucose levels. Generally, eating healthy foods and improving physical activity in daily life are the initial treatment strategies. Oral medications and insulin injections may be used to achieve adequate blood glucose levels.

Type 1 diabetes:

In type 1 diabetes, insulin must be provided exogenously as there is a deficiency of insulin due to the destruction of beta cells of the pancreas. The critical considerations are the quantity and frequency of the insulin being injected. It depends on the individual needs and the medical professional will select a type of insulin and determine its quantity and frequency of administration depending on the current and targeted glucose levels of the individual.

Type 2 diabetes:

In type w diabetes, the initial treatment targets changing the lifestyle of a person including eating a well-balanced and healthy diet, integrating aerobic and resistance exercises in daily life, and developing and implementing a weight loss plan. If these measures do not result in adequate control of blood glucose levels, oral medications and insulin will be considered. A doctor may use one or more types of medications or a particular type of insulin to achieve optimum blood sugar control. It is very important to monitor one's blood glucose levels along with using these treatment options.

Prediabetes means that your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but they cannot be categorized as diabetes yet. Different aspects of controlling prediabetes and preventing its development into type 2 diabetes include:

  • Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts is usually recommended.

  • Regular physical activity: Doing regular physical activity on daily basis is critical to control your body mass index and remain within recommended weight limits. If one is overweight, it is critical to work with a trained professional to develop a weight loss plan.

  • Stress management and finding social support: It is important to learn to manage stress and find adequate social support to aid the required changes to your life.

  • Medications: Sometimes, a medical professional may use different medications to help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes:

In gestational diabetes, it is important to achieve adequate glycemic control to prevent damaging effects on the health of the mother as well as the baby. Eating healthy food, daily exercise, and insulin injections are the mainstay of treatment for gestational diabetes.
