Causes of Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetics produce no, or very little, insulin and as a result, their blood sugar builds up in the blood and cannot be used as energy. This form of diabetes usually develops in childhood but can sometimes develop in adolescence or in adulthood. The cause of type 1 diabetes is still unknown but it is theorized that the disease occurs when the body's immune system destroys the cells that make insulin.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can't properly use the insulin that is released (ie. insulin resistance) or does not make enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes can be hereditary - if you have a family member with the disease, you'll have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. There are also many lifestyle choices that can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes such as lack of exercise, unhealthy food choices, and poor weight management. 

 

Symptoms of Diabetes

It is possible to have diabetes but not display any symptoms. However, in most cases, signs and symptoms include:

• Unusual thirst
• Frequent urination
• Fatigue
• Weight changes
• Blurred vision
• Tingling in extremities
• Wounds that are slow to heal

 

Diagnosis of Diabetes

Your doctor may want to test the amount of sugar in your blood to determine if you have diabetes by performing tests such as fasting blood glucose, random blood glucose, or A1C.

 

Living with Diabetes

Insulin therapy is required for type 1 diabetes. There are a variety of insulins available in a variety of dosage forms. Your doctor will help you determine how many injections you need daily, the dose for each injection, and when you need to inject.
